It’s that time of the year.
On Wednesday afternoon, Baseball America released their Top 30 prospect list for the Toronto Blue Jays. Without divulging the list (that you can read here if you have a subscription), we’ll look at some of the standouts.
The top five are who you’d usually see in the Blue Jays top five, Arjun Nimmala, Jake Bloss, Ricky Tiedemann, Orelvis Martínez, and Trey Yesavage. Of course, it’s not in that order, but all five of those players could realistically be considered top 100 prospects, albeit at the back end of the list. Baseball America’s own Geoff Pontes has four of these players in his top 100.
Speaking of Kasevich, the shortstop ranks in the team’s top 10, as does Alan Roden. Kasevich, a shortstop, was the Blue Jays second-round pick in the 2022 draft and slashed .296/.348/.385 with six home runs in 566 plate appearances last season in Double-A and Triple-A. Roden was picked in the third round and slashed .293/.391/.475 with 16 home runs in 530 plate appearances for a 136 wRC+ in Triple-A and Double-A.
Rounding out their top 10 are three lower-minor pitching prospects, Kendry Rojas, Landen Maroudis, and Fernando Pérez.
The biggest standout after the top ten is right-handed pitcher Ryan Jennings. Selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, the 25-year-old posted a 1.93 ERA and a 3.34 FIP with a 26.7 K% and a 9 BB% in 60.2 innings pitched last season between High-A and Double-A.
There are a few players the Jays acquired before the 2024 trade deadline in the 11-20 range, including Jonatan Clase, RJ Schreck, Will Wagner, and Charles McAdoo. Also in this range is their top international free agent signing in the 2025 period, shortstop Cristopher Polanco.
A first-time prospect on the Blue Jays’ top prospect list is right-handed pitcher Angel Bastardo, who the Blue Jays selected in the Rule 5 draft from the Boston Red Sox. The 22-year-old will miss the first half of the 2025 season due to recovering from Tommy John surgery but finished the 2024 season with a 5.36 ERA and a 4.28 FIP in 45.1 innings pitched. He has to remain on the Blue Jays 26-man roster when he returns.
Their first-round pick of the 2022 draft, Brandon Barriera, also slipped hard, landing in the 21-30 range. The left-handed pitcher is recovering from Tommy John surgery and should be available at some point this summer, knock on wood. Two more 2022 draft picks rank in this range, Peyton Williams and T.J. Brock. The latter recently had Tommy John surgery and won’t pitch in 2025.
All in all, the Blue Jays farm system isn’t nearly as bad as some people believe. It’s not a mid-tier farm system by any means as it lacks a top prospect, but they’ll get a big boost with the eighth overall pick.
